Preface
This book was written for undergraduate and graduate students in architecture, but may also be useful as a reference for engineers working in design firms and in the field. The Format is based on the BTEC Building Construction A (Level H) unit, but the content has been significantly enhanced in design and management based on the author’s experience in the industry. The book is a collection of architectural fundamentals combined with popular design and management techniques. Where possible, an overview of the design process is provided along with case studies and examples to help the reader understand the Design solution.
The book is intended to be a gateway to architectural design, offering the reader an overview of relevant practices and guiding the many other texts included in the book.
The book covers many areas of construction, from management and safety to design and construction, from soil and groundwater management to construction and road construction. The book begins with an overview of preconstruction and construction contract agreements that provide options for clients and engineers. Key contractual and regulatory frameworks are described and compared, along with their application to financial systems. It aims to show how construction projects can be effectively planned, managed and controlled. Security is examined in depth from a historical perspective, but also examines today’s responsibilities. Basic groundwater management and drilling techniques are reviewed and developed in guidance and design using case studies and examples. The structure was planned with a diagram, similar to the foundation, retaining wall and floor structure. The method used in the design is explained with various examples. Various superstructure construction methods are evaluated and compared to allow easy comparison of performance and costs. Character development with examples is also taken into account. The book concludes with a brief but comprehensive overview of water and road construction and design.
The author has tried to use modern materials wherever possible. Most of the information comes from the latest standards, technical equipment and industry sources. However, this being the case, it should be kept in mind that standards and design methods are frequently updated and the reader should check the up-to-datedness of the information in this guide.
