Preface
This book is about the Critical Path Method (CPM), which is schedule-based planning used in the construction industry. The difference is that the effective book uses one example for the entire project to illustrate the system of planning, scheduling, project acceleration, resource management, time control, financial control and project costing. An example project is a large bridge. It has been suggested that the building project may be of interest to many readers. We considered this idea carefully, although its complexity and simple structures obscure the details of the management project and limit the significance of the book. The bridge example, although a construction project, focuses on the construction process, which includes the basic elements of many construction projects: construction of the foundation, concrete works, structural steel and shaft works; All of these require control over the work. and material, contractor. management and hardware acceleration. The entire road bridge project takes 10 weeks to build and can be fully represented in 70 different projects.
This fifth edition has been updated to include labor, material, and equipment costs and includes complete estimates for highway bridges. This book develops management and control systems such as Work Breakdown Structures (WBS) and Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS). For readers outside the United States, a comparison in SI units is included in Appendix B. Of particular interest is Chapter 6, which includes discussions of product planning as it affects personnel, safety, quality, paper and equipment control. The site plan shows the location of temporary buildings, cladding, installation and preparation of equipment, fire suppression and primary equipment. Much of the information in this section comes from many years of construction experience and is specific to this document. For generations, people, machines, tools, methods and money have mastered architecture. Effective use of these resources forms the basis of construction management. However, in recent years there have been significant changes in this basic structure. Women are now an important part of the construction industry. They hold positions of responsibility in senior jobs and at all management levels. Terms like “journeyman,” “leader” and “pile driver” have been used in the industry for hundreds of years. Because only such terms are generally recognized, these terms are used in this document but are in no way intended to imply equality. Sometimes the word “he” or “it” is used as a noun. This use of the masculine gender is for reference purposes only and does not imply gender. The authors of this book recognize and appreciate the important role that women have played and continue to play in the construction industry.
This book teaches you how to capture, model and visualize a construction project to properly plan and manage it from start to finish. That’s why most of the examples are large and presented on a large page called tips. Due to limited resources, these tips can only be included in the book at certain times and are limited. When the tooltip appears, a guide will appear to help you identify the shape in the text. Sometimes clues are found in the next episode where they are shown.
This fifth edition represents 37 years of publication and three generations of authors. We hope that this updated document will continue to be the leading source of information for leading professionals and educational leaders for tomorrow’s builders.
