preface

Driving a car is both art and science. The trick is to choose the right type of pole and adapt it to soil conditions and packing methods. Science helps engineers predict the behavior of piles already in the ground and under load. This behavior is greatly affected by how the pile is constructed and cannot be predicted just by looking at the pile shape and undisturbed ground. Knowledge of the species available for classification and how to provide the structural basis is important for a better understanding of the scientific background of their behavior. For this reason, the author describes many types of piles, with and without material, and the materials used in their installation, avoiding sections on the calculation of allowable loads for piles and the behavior of changing materials. In recent years, significant progress has been made in the development of methods for predicting the behavior of piles under load. This is important for the design of deep water foundations for drilling rigs and oil tankers, as well as for offshore gas and oil pipelines. Problems associated with side loading of piles are discussed in detail in this book. The author had the opportunity to benefit from the worldwide experience in the design and construction of concrete foundations of his employer of almost 30 years, George Wimpey and Company Limited. He is grateful to the management of Wimpey Laboratories Ltd and their parent company for permission to include various examples of their work. Special thanks to P.F. We thank Winfield, Instructed for assistance with calculations, assistance with document review, and assistance in preparing samples.
